Saturday Small Business Shout Out! A recognition post for local businesses making efforts to reduce single-use plastics in the Coastal Bend region

This Saturday we would like to welcome Shoreline Sandwich Company to the Ocean Friendly Restaurant Program in the Coastal Bend! Welcome to the map Shoreline! Thank you for making a huge step in the right direction! Shoreline has officially signed a one-year membership through the Coastal Bend Chapter Surfrider Foundation’s Ocean Friendly Restaurant Program in hopes to reduce plastic waste one restaurant and one customer at a time. Surfrider’s Ocean Friendly Restaurant (OFR) program and membership highlights businesses that pledge to meet an ocean friendly standard, based on a comprehensive list of criteria. These criteria include that the OFR agrees to comply with the following four requirements:

1.No expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam is used.

2.Proper recycling practices are followed.

3.Only reusable tableware is used for onsite dining, and disposable utensils for takeout food are provided only upon request.

4.No plastic bags are offered for takeout or to-go orders.

Shoreline will be following the four required program criteria with the additional:

  1. Plastic straws are provided only upon request
  2. A discount is offered for customers which reusable mugs, cups, bags, etc.
  3. Vegetarian/Vegan food options are offered on a regular basis
  4. All seafood must be ‘Best Choice’ or ‘Good Alternative’ as defined by Seafood Watch or certified as sustainable

A national movement to reduce our plastic footprint has recently found it’s way to the Corpus Christi area, and it’s geared to the places we love the most, our local restaurants.

The program is called “Ocean Friendly Restaurants” which encourages restaurant owners to skip the plastic. And local restaurants — like the Shoreline Sandwich Company — are more than happy to comply.

Kris Busk, the owner of Shoreline Sandwich Company, says 2 of his three restaurants are 100% compliant with the “ocean-friendly” movement and his third restaurant will be fully compliant soon.

Busk admits it takes a little more work and money to skip the plastic but says it’s a responsibility he’s more than happy to take on.

Busk said, “It can be done. You can get the right packaging, the correct bags to fit your products; you can give people great containers and great service and people will come back and maybe even pay a little extra for it as well.”

This is an excellent step in the right direction to help phase out single use plastics off our beaches and support local! This is a great statement for the Coastal Bend since single use plastics litter our beaches and storm drains constantly. Any small step toward plastic reduction is a big step in the right direction!
