Save the Waves at Bob Hall Pier in Corpus Christi, TX

Goal achieved: Secured support for a two-piling pier design and ensured that the new Bob Hall Pier will produce quality sandbars and waves for surfing.

Bob Hall Pier has been a premiere surfing location for locals and visitors since the mid 1960's. The waves at the pier have been touted as some of the best in Texas and numerous competitions, including the Texas State Surfing Championships, have been held there.

Hurricane Hanna badly damaged the pier in 2020, and it is now being dismantled. The design of the new pier was in the early phase, and instead of the two-piling construction that all Texas Gulf piers have, the current design proposed to incorporate single pilings.

The Texas Coastal Bend Chapter and the local surfing community were concerned that a single-piling design won’t produce the same quality of wave that Bob Hall Pier is known for. Fewer pilings and longer spans between those pilings will likely mean that the sandbars beside the pier will be less defined and in turn, the waves could become unrideable.

By securing a unanimous vote from the Nueces County Commissioners to proceed with a two pile architectural design, the chapter and surfing community feel confident that the sandbars beside the pier will continue to produce high quality waves into the future.
